My granddaughters love our Echo Dot, and it turns out a smart speaker is a surprisingly good grandkid-time tool — no screen, no setup, and it keeps up with kids who ask “again!” more times than I can count.
Alexa Trivia
Ages 5–10 · 10–15 min · No mess
Just say “Alexa, open trivia” or ask for kids’ trivia, and take turns answering. I let them “win” more often than they should, and we keep a running tally on a notepad so there’s something to fight over besides who goes first.
You’ll need: An Echo Dot or other Alexa-enabled speaker.
Why it works: It’s low-prep and self-refereeing — Alexa reads the question and confirms the answer, so I’m not the one deciding who’s right.
Alexa Story Time
Ages 2–8 · 10–20 min · No mess
Alexa can read a story on her own, or I’ll ask her to play soft background music while I do the reading and voices myself — either way works. It’s an easy fallback for the last stretch before bed when my voice needs a break.
You’ll need: An Echo Dot or other Alexa-enabled speaker, and a favorite book if you’re reading along.
Why it works: A new voice reading the same old favorite makes it feel fresh again, and it’s a nice way to wind down without a screen involved.
Dance Party
Ages 2–10 · 10–15 min · No mess
“Alexa, play kids’ dance music” and clear a little floor space. This is our go-to when everyone’s got wiggles to burn off and the weather’s kept us stuck inside all day.
You’ll need: An Echo Dot or other Alexa-enabled speaker, and some open floor space.
Why it works: It’s pure energy release with zero setup, and freeze-dance style stopping and starting adds a little listening practice on top of the fun.
Cleanup Timer Game
Ages 3–8 · 5–10 min · No mess
“Alexa, set a timer for five minutes” and see how many toys make it back in the bin before it goes off. I call out encouragement like a very enthusiastic coach — it turns the least fun part of the day into something closer to a game.
You’ll need: An Echo Dot or other Alexa-enabled speaker.
Why it works: A ticking clock makes cleanup feel like a challenge instead of a chore, and “beating the timer” is its own reward.
